INTRODUCTION:
1. Attitude is defined as:
A. A mental position with regard to a fact or state.
B. A feeling or emotion toward a fact or state.
C. Position or bearing as indicating action, feeling, or mood.
2. Attitudes can be classified as POSITIVE or NEGATIVE, GOOD or BAD.
3. Attitude can determine the course of ones life, whether its a success or failure.
I. ATTITUDE OF DISOBEDIENCE
1. Rebellion; it is the root of all sin and misery.
2. Exodus 5:2; "And Pharaoh said, Who is the Lord, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the Lord, nor will I let Israel go.
3. Jonah 1:1-3; "Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying, Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me. But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord."
II. "I DONT HAVE TO."
1. This attitude is a constant challenge to authority.
2. In children
3. Don't have to attend every service Heb. 10:25; "not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."
4. Don't have to worship every Lords day.
5. Don't have to be baptized Mark 16:16; "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned."
III. DO AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE.
1. "Let George do it."
2. Student who just wants to get by.
3. Builder who wants to get by cheaply.
4. Church that wants to do as little as possible.
IV. SHIFT RESPONSIBILITY.
1. Husband or wife wants to shift responsibility for discipline of children.
2. We like to shift financial responsibilities in the church.
3. Some just want no responsibility at all.
V. ATTITUDE OF NECESSITY
1. "I don't want to but if I have to."
2. Give of necessity - - 2 Cor. 9:7; "So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver."
VI. ATTITUDE OF FAULT FINDING
1. Do no constructive work of their own.
2. Like a bird watcher looking through the binoculars.
3. They will find what they're looking for - - Matt. 7:1ff
VII. ATTITUDE OF FEAR
1. The one talent man was afraid - - Matt. 25:25; "And I was afraid, and went
and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours."
2. Love will cast out fear1 John 4:18; "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who
fears has not been made perfect in love."
VIII. ATTITUDE OF; "I WOULD IF"
1. There is some condition that is never present.
2. "If I had a lot of Money."
IX. ATTITUDE OF; "I CANT!"
1. This person is already defeated. (10 spies)
2. Phil. 4:13; "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me."
X. ATTITUDE OF INDIFFERENCE
1. "He couldn't care less."
2. Pilate tried this - - it didn't work.
XI. ATTITUDE OF COMPROMISE
1. You give a little; I'll give a little.
2. 2 John 1:9-12; "Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds. Having many things to write to you, I did not wish [to] [do] [so] with paper and ink; but I hope to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full."
XII. DICTATORIAL OR BOSSY ATTITUDE
1. Do it my way or not at all.
2. 3Joh 1:9-10; "I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have
the preeminence among them, does not receive us. Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with
malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting [them] out of the church."
XIII. ATTITUDES OF THREE MEN
1. Naaman got MAD2 Kings 5:11
2. Rich young ruler was sad - - Mark 10:22; "But he was sad at this word, and
went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions."
3. The Eunuch was GLAD - - Acts 8:39; "Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing."
XIV. ATTITUDE OF LOVE
1. Peter said: "yea Lord; thou knowest I love thee." Jesus said; "Feed my
sheep."
2. John 14:15; "If you love Me, keep My commandments."
